Putin’s Ukrainian executioners worse than Stalin’s

Read (and listen to) the transcript of intercepted phone calls (Bes to Alph) ordering the murder of a pro-Ukrainian politician (Rybak) in east Ukraine on April 17 and the later call from the head of Russian special operations (Colonel Strelkov) to the self-proclaimed mayor (Ponomarev) to dispose of the tortured body.

What a gang of thugs! This illustrates why Putin's Russia is indeed a KGB state.

Is Putin's New Type Of War In Ukraine Failing?

As the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.” Putin’s New Kind of War has given him some ten cities and towns in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian special forces and self-appointed city officials. They rain terror on non-cooperative citizens, murder political opponents, use human shields, and go so far as to threaten summary execution of those possessing Ukrainian information leaflets.Is Putin’s New Kind of War giving him the results he needs? I would argue, No!

Who Am I?

Paul R. Gregory is a Research Fellow, Hoover Institution
Cullen Professor of Economics, University of Houston. He is also a research professor at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin. He is chair emeritus of the International Advisory Board of the Kyiv School of Economics. He serves as co-editor of the Yale-Hoover Series on Stalin, Stalinism, and Cold War. He has co-edited archival publications, such as the seven volume History of Stalin's Gulag (2004) and the three-volume Stenograms of Meetings of the Politburo (2008). Gregory is the organizer of the Hoover Sino-Soviet Archives Workshop that takes place in the summer at the Hoover Institution.
His recent publications include Lenin's Brain and Other Tales from the Secret Soviet Archives (Hoover 2004) and Terror by Quota (Yale, 2009).
