Putin's Human Rights Council Accidentally Posts Real Crimean Election Results

The website of the “President of Russia’s Council on Civil Society and Human Rights” posted a blog that was quickly taken down as if it were toxic radioactive waste. According to the Council’s report about the March referendum to annex Crimea, the turnout was a maximum 30%. And of these, only half voted for annexation – meaning only 15 percent of Crimean citizens voted for annexation.
The fate of Crimea, therefore, was decided by the 15 percent of Crimeans, who voted in favor of unification with Russia (under the watchful eye of Kalashnikov-toting soldiers).

Council under Putin admitted that only 15% of Crimeans voted for annexation to Russia
Crimea for joining Russia actually did not vote - this statement recently appeared on the website of the Council under the President of Russia on the development of civil society and human rights. Uncomfortable with presidential news site quickly removed, but a human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina said in an interview , " Channel 24" that disgraced Russian Crimean campaign , said in a story TSN.Tizhden .

Gannushkina - one of those who have researched the Crimean mood.

According to members of the Presidential Council on March referendum on the status of an autonomous republic came to a maximum of 30 % of citizens. And only half of which were the referendum voted in favor of annexation to Russia .

So the fate of the Ukrainian Crimea determined pro-Russian minority : about 15 %.

Earlier Mejlis said that the true turnout figures in the so -called "referendum" and votes for joining the Crimea to Russia several times less than the declared Russian .

According to the Kremlin, nearly 97 % support joining the Crimea to Russia . And it is this " vote " allegedly became the basis for the so-called " contract " for the inclusion of " State of Crimea" in the Russian Federation.

  3. Dear Sir,
I have seen the report, which can be found on the net easily. What Ukraine TV reports and you republish is not true.
Don't get me wrong, the Council's estimate is much lower than the Kremlin's official figure, but it's not at all 15%
According to the council the city of Sevastopol "overwhelmingly" voted in favour with between 50% to 80% attendance. other cities and towns voted between 50% to 60% in favour with 30% to 50% attendance.
One should twist the math to the extreme to get a 50% favourable vote with 30% attendance, or 15% of all from this.
    Best,
    Alex

  4. Paul...tsk tsk tsk. In these times where information can be so easily stored, why do you lie.

    1. UPDATE: This article has been updated to include a screenshot of a report from the Russian Human Rights Council, and revised to reflect the turnout and voting ranges reflected in that report. The original version of this article only discussed the 15 percent figure cited in Ukrainian media.

  5. The council posted nothing like the "real results", they posted the result of an informal poll taken by three of their lawyers. I know you had fun during the cold war and want those days back, but making things up isn't going to help.

  6. Paul, thanks for your objective observations and commentary on the events in Ukraine. I have personally spent several months of accrued time in Ukaine during multiple trips over the last 18 months. Through my extensive first person interaction with dozens and dozens of people in Ukraine representing a wide range of professions and demographic make up; the VAST majority of people that I met during my visits to various regions of Ukraine DO NOT support breaking away from Ukraine and reverting to being ruled by Moscow.

I have found some of the commentary that I read on the Internet to be utterly laughable. Like "Bagdad Bob" of few years ago, some of these people appear to be living in completely different world separated from reality.

Indeed, old habits are hard to break. When several generations of a poplulation lived under a repressive, autocratic system of government where ANY form of free thinking was severely punished; we shouldn't be so surprised when large segments of the population still behave in the ways of old even in the absense of the oppressive government.

Personally, I found the people of Ukraine to be highly educated, intelligent, open and honest about their political and philosophical beliefs. EVERY single person that I met would greatly prefer that the USA, Russia and the EU leave them alone so that Ukrainians can govern Ukraine without outside interference.

So from a point of view based upon having personally spent a great deal of time in Ukraine myself, I find these reports of 80-90% of local populations favoring thinly veiled Russian rule of several Oblasts (state like regions of Ukraine) like Crimea, Donetsk, Odessa, Lugansk, etc. to be completely ridiculous. These folks that keep posting "fantasy facts" of their own making, or mindlessly re-reporting the fiction of others either have no first hand knowledge of the real situation in Ukraine; or they have ulterior motives for their posting of such mindless dribble.
